The following changes were made:

slower down game action and ball speed; user has more time to react

adding delete-button to the keyboard (in respect to the definition of usability phase "errors")

replacing red-dot on user's hand with user ID

new color scheme. more brightness

position of scores during the game are set father from the borders

"misplaced text"- bugs are fixed

paddles are bigger now

change depth image to real background

We have set a real Background, so the users can see themselves playing the game and the control becomes more intuitive

Brighter color and better contrasts where set. Additionally, instead of the yellow progress circle on the right corner, we have put a progress bar directly into the action buttons .
The old "One-Class-Structure" was not designed for collaborative working. In a group which consist of 4 computer science students and 1 human factor student, its really hard to work on only one class. Besides this we only had 1 Kinect to test our application. To solve this problem we additionally add mouse control to our application. The following pictures show the packages as UML diagrams:

The package structure looks like:
Our application was displayed on a 30" large display. Since our application is designed for large public displays, we preferred using a large display over notebook monitors for more accurate results.

We tested our application on two users. We asked the subjects to say their thoughts out aloud and took notes.

The subjects were asked to try and interact with the application, without prior knowledge of its contents. This task included understanding the purpose of each page of the application, understanding the icons, the buttons and the actions required to trigger these buttons, since one of our main goals is that our application is self-explanatory. We were also very interested in knowing how challenging the game is to the average user.

Our Subjects:
Carla, 23 years old, studies biology, has experience with gaming using the EyeToy on the Playstion 2, no experience with the Kinect.
Paul, 28 years old, studies chemistry, has gaming experience with both the Kinect and the EyeToy.

The subjects criticized the following features of our application:

• During the game, things happen too fast, so that the user has not enough time to decide for a proper action and react in time.
• The game concept is not identifiable
• The red paddle moves too slow
• On the border of the game, the behavior of the red paddle and dot are irritating
• The ball moves too fast
• The scoring system is not comprehensible
• There is no delete button on the keyboard in the high score page
• Having the red paddle and dot painted simultaneously on the user's hand is irritating
• The color scheme used throughout the game is not appealing
• The natural colored image is preferred over the depth image

Aside from the user feedback, the user test gave us also the benefit of reviewing our program once more. We noticed the following bugs in our application:
• when having more than 3 digits for scores, some of the digits are not properly displayed in the page and are misplaced
• after changing from the score page to the menu page, all of the displayed text is misplaced and shifted to the left.

For eliminating the detected bugs and a higher user satisfaction, we have planned the following modifications to our application:
• Using the normal color image instead of the depth image from the Kinect.
• Remove the dots that are drawn on the hands completely, or to replace them with the user ID
• Make the paddles bigger
• Make the ball slower
• Add delete button to the keyboardLeilyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04194703338668998494noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3525569048318612421.post-55030502143716406962012-01-26T12:48:00.007+01:002012-02-02T12:48:36.788+01:00Application ModificationsIn order to solve the problems detected during the heuristic evaluation, we have applied the following changes to our application:

We added a new page to our application called the Start Page, where a demo of the game is shown in the background. A text, two blinking arrows and two silhouettes are also displayed to act a guide to the user of how to start the game.

For indicating the highlighting duration which a Action Button needs, we have added a progress circle to the top right corner of each page, which fills itself fully up in the highlighting duration.

When a game is over, a continue button appears, which the user has to activate in order to continue.

We have introduced a new page to the game, called the "Score Board", which shows a table with the names of the users that have completed the came in the shortest time. This page challenges the users so that they compete for the top rankings. While the old structure consisted of only one class, which made parallel programming impossible, the new structure consists of many packages and classes. This structure allows us to work on different parts of the application simultaneously. Also, we were able to test application by easily replacing the Kinect inputs, with mouse inputs, which to some extent solved the problem of having only one Kinect and 4 developers.

Visibility

Our design does not include any hidden menus, therefore granting a good degree of visibility. Furthermore, the action of pressing any button in our application will be made easily understandable by implementing a progress bar filling up while the user has to keep the selection.

2. Feedback

Our application includes various sounds to give an audible feedback to the user. In addition to that the game state is displayed as a score panel at the top of each player's screen.

3. Constraints

The users are restricted to move their pad only in their respective play area.
Another constraint is realized in the fact that a potential second player needs the agreement of the first player to join the game, so no one can interfere negatively with a player's game.

4. Mapping

Pong itself is perfectly mapped from the real world version of the game.
Also, mapping is given by the implementation of each player's UI elements in a single color for each player.

5. Consistency

Throughout the application we only use a single kind of button or interactivity, therefore consistency is given.

6. Affordance

As mentioned above, a progress bar for each button will be implemented to ensure a high degree of affordance. This is in accordance to EyeToy and similar environments, so experienced users have very easy access to our application and do not have to relearn the controls.

task done by: BenediktLeilyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04194703338668998494noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3525569048318612421.post-54475235429448767972012-01-19T18:10:00.000+01:002012-01-19T18:10:52.943+01:00Screenshots of Prototype

In addition to the silhouettes in the start screen, a small notice will be displayed which describes what our game is, and how to start a new game. In the background of the same screen, will show a demo of the game so that the passengers know how our game will look like in action.

The main menu screen will be modified in such a manner that the game mode is no longer be chosen by holding a hand over the corresponding button for a pre-defined time period. In order to start a game, the user must first select a button by holding her hand over the button. This will cause for the button to change its color from white to blue and in addition, a Start button will appear. Now if the user holds her hand over the start button for some time, than the game will start in the desired mode. This way of interaction, allows for the user to only require one hand for starting the game.

In the gaming screen, an exit button has replaced the game mode information. Using this button, the user can exit the game and return to the main menu screen at any time during a running game. Also, the current score of each player is displayed as "current score/maximum score". This informs the users how many points they have to score in order to win a game.

Now, there exists a high score board for all of the single player modes of the game. Depending on the mode, in which the game was played a score board containing the highest score for that specific mode is displayed. An "Enter" button is also added to the keyboard. This buttons appears as soon as the first letter has been typed. This allows the user to enter a character sequence with a maximum length of 3 and a minimum length of 1. After the user has entered her name, the ranking screen will be shown for a few seconds, after that the main menu will be shown. If no interaction with the screen is registered for some time, than the start screen will be displayed.

In general, the screen will be made fancier and more appealing than the original simple screens. As an effort in this direction, we have added stars to the high score board.

At the beginning of each test, the user had some problems in “simulating” the interaction with the display by the Kinect. But during the process, they got used to it.

<span style="font-family: "Arial", "Helvetica", sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Arial", "Helvetica", sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial", "Helvetica", sans-serif;">When the test started, it wasn’t clear for one of the users, what the game was going to be like. S/he suggested having a demo of the game shown, so that passengers get an idea of what the game looks like.

<span style="font-family: "Arial", "Helvetica", sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Arial", "Helvetica", sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial", "Helvetica", sans-serif;">As we came to the menu-screen, one user said that s/he would like to have a start button instead of activating the button by hovering over it for some time.

<span style="font-family: "Arial", "Helvetica", sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Arial", "Helvetica", sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial", "Helvetica", sans-serif;">Although the gameplay itself is intuitive, one of the users stated that it was unclear when the game will end or how long s/he has to play the game in order to win. Therefore, s/he wanted to see how many points s/he has to score to win, or the remaining time of the game. Also during gameplay, one user wished to have a restart or exit button, so that new arrived users can quickly start a new game instead of waiting for the game to end.

<span style="font-family: "Arial", "Helvetica", sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "Arial", "Helvetica", sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "Arial", "Helvetica", sans-serif;">In the highscore screen the users found it hard to use a keyboard without an “enter”-button. One of them had the intention of just typing one letter instead of three for her/his name.
<span style="font-family: "Arial", "Helvetica", sans-serif;"> <span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; font-size: 11.0pt; line-height: 115%; mso-ansi-language: EN-US; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-fareast-font-family: SimSun; mso-fareast-language: JA; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-fareast; mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin;"><span style="font-family: "Arial", "Helvetica", sans-serif;">After typing the letters, we had idea to switch back to the menu-screen automatically after approx. 3 to 5 seconds, so that a new game could start. Both users welcomed this idea. An idea was to put more fancy images into the record-screen.
They spent an average of 1 hour waiting for their train, bus or tram to arrive each day. During this period they read books and listen to music.

All the users were familiar with motion interaction using the Kinect or EyeToy. They also expressed their interest in interacting with large public displays using these types of input devices. Most of the users preferred using only one hand for interaction due the possibility that they are holding something with the other hand.

The users all showed interest for playing Pong during their waiting time. They reasoned that since this game is playable by all ages, it is appropriate for a public display. A very interesting finding was that the users welcomed the multiplayer mode of the game more than the single player mode. They also insisted that in order for them to play the game often, the game should be challenging enough, so that the difficulty rises as the skills of the player increases, but at the same time the duration of a round of the game shouldn't take longer than 2-3 minutes. They also welcomed the idea of having a scoreboard so that the users could enter their names when they reached a high score. Also, the users didn't like the game to have a level-wise approach, i.e. only after completing one level, the user may advance to the next level.

However, one of user's said that he would feel ashamed of playing this game in public, if it requires doing wild moves. The users also stated that the location of the displays is very important for them. If interacting with the display causes them to accidently collide with other passengers, or if it hinders other passenger in anyway, they would rather not interact with the display at all.

Task done by: Leily, The Hieu<span style="font-family: verdana;font-family:";font-size:100%;" lang="EN-US" ><span style="Arial", "Helvetica", sans-serif;">
The Hieuhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04373304119644310302noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3525569048318612421.post-6145659404125433862012-01-05T15:52:00.004+01:002012-01-09T23:51:38.414+01:00Persona: Belinda
Age: 28

Profession: Promoter

Belinda grew up in Argentina as an only child of a high school teacher and an accountant. Designing this question sheet and interviewing was done by: Leily & The Hieu
The Findings will be posted separately.

The interview agenda is the following:

Phase 1: General Questions

Introduction: Hello, we are a group involved in a university project that is aimed to entertain people waiting in Bus/Tram/Train stations using public interactive displays. In this regard, we would like to ask you some questions. These questions are really intuitive to answer because there is no right or wrong. They will be about your person and about your opinion to our project. We are collecting these data and will evaluate them for a better usage of our application. And of course, all your information and answers will be treated strictly confidential! So, let’s begin if you are ready.

Personal questions: sex, age, education, languages , job, left/right handed

Which public transport system do you generally use no matter to work or in free time?

How often do you use it/them per day? Per week?

How long do you wait for the public transport at the station in average?

What are you doing while waiting at the station?

Have you ever experienced motion interaction? e.g. EyeToy or Kinect?

On a scale from 1 to 10, where 10 is the “Very Interested”, to what extend are you interested in interacting with public displays? Especially with display sizes of about 1.2m x 1,8m and in public! And why?

If you are interacting with or using a public display by motion interaction, would you like to use both hands?

How would you feel about interacting in public?

Phase 2: Questions regarding Pong

So, that was the first part. Now we are getting to the part with your opinion about our gaming application Pong which is designed for the users during their waiting time at a public subway, bus or train-station [We Explain Pong]. Now, I would like to ask you some general questions first. And just like before, your data will be treated strictly confidential.

Would you be interested in a playing Pong in single player or multi player mode? And why?

How much time would you spend in interacting with our application? Just until the next transportation comes or longer, if the application makes fun?

Are you interested in a level-wise game design or an on-going game? Why?

Does the concept of this game attract your attention for interacting with it? And why?

How often would you use this application daily if you had the time?

Do you have any concerns about privacy issues when other passengers you playing/interacting at the station?

Are you interested in a scoring and system ranking in game? And what about the privacy issues there?

Would you prefer using both hands or just one?

a) Are there any objects or obstacles that would hinder you in interacting using both hands with the display? E.g. handbag or carrier-bag…

b) Which hand do you prefer?

We are almost done with the interview.

Do you have any further questions or remarks, ideas that can be integrated/replaced in our application and tell me why?

Do you have another idea/location for the public-entertainment?

Thank you very much for your time!

StyleUp

Fortune Cookie

Pong

Snow Snatcher

You can find an entry to each of these projects in this blog. In a team meeting, each member voted for the projects that s/he thought were the most appropriate ones for being implemented later. Though we liked all of ideas, we decided that Pong would be project that we will execute.
And the winner is...Pong!
Snow SnatcherSnow Snatcher is a mini game that can be played by users of all ages and is especially designed to be played in the winter time.

Since this game is designed to be played on public displays, it should be able to:

attract the attention of pedestrians, who are unaware of the existence of such a game

a level of this game should not take a long time

it should also be fun so that users are motivated to play this game more than once

it should not contain any content that is not suitable for children

This game can be played in single player mode. when a level starts and a user is calibrated, a pair of gloves will be drawn on the user's hands. these gloves move as the user moves his/her hands. There will be snow flakes raining on the screen and the user will have to try to hit as many snow flakes as possible with his/gloved hands. When a user hits a snow flake, it disappears. Each level is time based. When a level has passed, a snowman will appear on the screen. Depending on the number of the gathered snow flakes, the snowman will look different. Low number of flakes will result is a small and sad snowman, where as lot of snow flakes will results in a huge and happy snowman.

Subtle interaction of the user with the display is required so that the user can be detected by the Kinect and that the game can be played. For drawing the attention of passing people, demos of the game or images of the different snowmen can be displayed, while an arrow appears on each pedestrians head, and a speech-balloon will be displayed which reads "build your own snowman".

For making the game even more attractive, a scoring system can be added to the game, so that the users will play with the goal of getting the highest score. Users who make it to the high score board, can have their pictures taken and displayed.Leilyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04194703338668998494noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3525569048318612421.post-39189670294558671772011-12-12T21:06:00.005+01:002012-01-09T16:02:58.577+01:00Three of 4...
